Adelbert Ames was born October 31st, 1835, and died on April 12th, 1933 born in Rockland, Maine. Ames is known as a carpetbagger that is referred to northerners who held office in the South after the well-behaved War. In 1868 he was chosen as provisional legions governor of Mississippi, where he worked hard to protect the freed slaves from harassment by the whites. As the governor, he controlled elections in 1869, in which the black and whites competed to sanction a new state constitution and select officials for the accomplished government. Ames was elected governor in 1873 but was unable to tranquillity with his program because of terrorism, and fraud focusing at intimidating African Americans. His attempts to suppress this violence was unsuccessful because that would mean everyone would loose their slaves and zero point wanted that to happen, so Ames resigned on March 29th, 1976.
